In 2021, YouTuber Logan Paul acquired a PSA Grade 10 quality version for more than $5 million, setting a record. In 2023, again, the head-turning card records another historic sale.

New all-time record for a Pokémon card

Today, Pokémon Company can add a new record to its already busy list. Another Pikachu Illustrator card was still sold for an impressive 2 million dollars on the Goldin auction site. We are far from the record of 5 million, but this sale positions it as the second most expensive Pokémon card to dateright behind the Pikachu Illustrator card, purchased by Logan Paul.

And we are not at the end of our surprises. Another identical Pikachu Illustrator card is currently up for auction on Goldin, probably put up for sale by the same owner. As of this writing, bidding has already reached $240,000 after just 13 offerssuggesting a sale price potentially equal to or higher than that of the card in question.

39 existing maps in the world

For those who wonder about these brain-twisting figures, a few clarifications are in order. Pikachu Illustrator cards are extremely rare: we are talking precisely about 39 existing cards, indicates the specialized site vintageisthenewold. They were given to the winners of an illustration competition organized by the Japanese magazine CoroCoro between 1997 and 1998. These cards, at least 25 years old, are true relics.

Preserving them in good enough condition to obtain a PSA (Professional Sports Authenticators) rating of 9 or 10 represents a major challenge for any collector. The slightest little “problem” is enough to divide the value of a card. These days, only millionaires seem to be able to afford these treasures… unless you won a Pokémon illustration contest in Japan in 1998!
