New Urinary Infection Screening Test Process: What You Need to Know

2024-01-31 00:00:00

Since November 2023, the process of carrying out the urinary infection screening test has been simplified.

A pharmacist can now offer you a screening test directly, in a pharmacy and without a prescription. This possibility was established by the Social Security financing law for 2024 published in the Official Journal on December 27, 2023.
The test is only intended for women aged 16 to 65, under certain conditions. For example, you cannot do this if:

  • you are pregnant or there is a risk of pregnancy;
  • you have had a urinary infection in the last 15 days;
  • you have had more than three episodes of urinary tract infection in the last 12 months.

You can go directly to a pharmacy without first consulting a doctor.
To note : carrying out the test in a pharmacy costs €6. It is covered by Health Insurance up to 70%, the remaining 30% is covered by your complementary health insurance.

How does a pharmacy screening take place?

Screening consists of a urine test. The pharmacist checks the patient’s symptoms to ensure that she does not show any signs of seriousness (fever, hypothermia, etc.). The patient is given a bottle and can use the pharmacy toilets.
The pharmacist carries out a test using a urine strip, confirming or not a urinary infection:

  • if the test is positive: the pharmacist will redirect the patient to her doctor, who can prescribe medication.
  • if the test is negative: the pharmacist excludes the diagnosis of urinary infection and refers the patient to a medical consultation.

The result is known within a few minutes. Whatever the result, the screening conclusions are transmitted to the patient’s treating physician.

To know : have you ever seen a doctor? He can give you a “conditional” prescription: if you take the test in the pharmacy and it turns out to be positive, you will be able to obtain the antibiotic treatment directly thanks to this prescription.
