“Attention, the product has become smaller,” warn new notices in stores that retailers have to put up under pressure from the government.

In accordance with the Ministry of Economic Affairs regulation, customers in grocery stores will receive notices if the packaging of a product has been reduced in size, but the price has not. Under the new rules, which come into force on March 1, a retailer running a business of a certain size must use a leaflet and signage with specific formal requirements to inform customers.

“This new measure adopted by the government will help consumers make more prudent and conscious purchasing decisions,” the ministry wrote in a press release. All food retailers with sales of more than 1 billion forints are now legally obliged to inform customers by placing a warning next to the product if the packaging of the packaged products available from them is smaller than before.
