New Year’s Eve event in central Seoul expected to draw 100,000 people = city takes safety measures

The New Year’s Eve bell-ringing event at Bosingak began in 1953. This year, which marks the 70th anniversary of the event, a total of 22 people, including Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and 12 citizen representatives, will ring the bell.
The citizen representatives include those who rescued victims of an indiscriminate attack on a commercial facility in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, near Seoul in August. Six YouTubers from overseas who have global influence will also ring the bell.
Performances to celebrate the new year will be held at the countdown event venue in Sejong-daero, and anyone can watch them without prior reservation.
The city of Seoul expects about 100,000 people to gather, and will deploy about 1,100 people to handle traffic control and safety, in addition to city and Jongno-gu officials. Since the number of people is expected to be double that of last year, the number of safety personnel has also been doubled.
The countdown event will be broadcast live on Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) and Seoul’s YouTube channel “Live Seoul.”
For these events, subway and bus service will be extended until 2 a.m. on New Year’s Day. However, in order to alleviate congestion, there will be no stops at Jonggak Station near Bosingak from 11pm to 1am, and entry and exit at Gwanghwamun Station will be restricted from 12am to 2am, and trains will be closed to nearby stations. The subway users will be spread out.
