A 40-year-old rammed a tree while driving at 1 a.m. Thursday on a main road in the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. He obviously wanted to get away with it, but that was counting without his iPhone 14 stuffed with so-called smart sensors.

Due to the violence of the shock, the device has indeed activated the function of calling the emergency services. In a state of intoxication, the man did not have the necessary reflex to interrupt the device within the 20 seconds allowed and thus had to respond to the emergency workers alerted. He failed to be convincing enough when he said “that the police shouldn’t be worried about it”, relate the Stuff media. As his interlocutor suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol, he immediately alerted the police by providing the location of the driver transmitted by the iPhone.

Arrived on the scene, the police noted the presumed state of intoxication of the driver, who was anything but delighted to see them. He even shoved an officer in charge of the procedure for driving under the influence of alcohol and refused to take a blood sample. The driver will appear in court on February 16.

The alert function of the iPhone in the event of an accident had rather been noticed in recent weeks by untimely alerts to emergencies, in particular in case of minor falls on the ski slopes.
