The newly elected state parliament meets for the first time in Salzburg on Wednesday. In addition to the swearing-in of the 36 members of parliament, the focus of the constitutive meeting is the election of the new state government. For the first time, Salzburg is governed by a coalition of ÖVP and FPÖ. Governor Wilfried Haslauer at the top starts his third term of office. Unlike in 2018, the opposition parties are likely to vote against the seven members of the government this year.

In the state elections on April 23, 2023, five factions succeeded in entering the state parliament. The ÖVP achieved twelve seats, the FPÖ ten. The SPÖ holds seven mandates, the KPÖ Plus four and the Greens three. Four of the seven members of the government will be appointed by the People’s Party in the forthcoming legislative period – it is the 17th in the Second Republic – and three by the Liberals.

The schedule for Wednesday (beginning of the meeting at 9.15 a.m.) is tight: after the swearing-in of the members of the state parliament – for 14 of them it is the first official meeting in the Chiemseehof – the election of state parliament president Brigitta Pallauf (ÖVP) and the second state parliament president Andreas Teufl takes place (FPÖ).

Then, individually and for the first time in a secret election, state governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP), his future deputies Marlene Svazek (FPÖ) and Stefan Schnöll (ÖVP) and the state councilors Josef Schwaiger, Daniela Gutschi (both ÖVP) and the future state councilors Christian Pewny and Martin Zauner (both FPÖ) elected and sworn into the state constitution. The twelve state parliament committees will then be appointed and staffed, and the four new federal councilors (two ÖVP, one FPÖ, one SPÖ) will be appointed.

After the decision on the beginning of the 1st session of the 17th legislative period follows the government statement by Governor Haslauer and LHStv. Marlene Svazek. This is followed by statements from the five state parliament parties.
