News 24 | Food and Drug Administration Corrects Wrong Beliefs About Fats

The Food and Drug Authority refuted a number of false beliefs about fats, including that all food products free of fat are healthy.

The authority explained that fats are one of the main nutrients that the human body uses for growth and vital functions, adding that fats help build nerve cells, as well as hormones, and are a rich source of energy.

She added that not all fat-free food products are healthy because some are high in sugar, refined carbohydrates and calories that may affect health.

She pointed out that some believe that all fats are unhealthy and are not needed by the body, in addition to the fact that they cause a high level of cholesterol in the blood, but this is not true, because people need fats because they help absorb vitamins such as vitamin A, unsaturated fats can reduce inflammation, enhance memory, and help regulate hormones.

She stressed that a person should not limit fat intake unless he has a health condition that affects his ability to digest and absorb fat, or if the doctor advised him to limit it.

She added that saturated fats and trans fats are associated with an increase in blood cholesterol, but other types of fats have shown a significant decrease in cholesterol levels, including those found in sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.

The Food and Drug Authority pointed out that what some believe that coconut oil is a healthy alternative and a better choice for cooking and does not raise the level of cholesterol in the blood is incorrect, adding that coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are a good source of energy for the cells of the body, but Keep in mind that this type of oil is high in saturated fat, which can contribute to high cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease.

She noted that some people think that fats from an animal source are healthier than fats from a vegetable source, but the fact is that eating a large amount of animal source fat leads to an increase in cholesterol, and clogging of arteries, which increases the risk of heart disease, so it is better when cooking to use Unsaturated fats such as olive oil.
