NHL Recaps: Raymond, Kaprizov, and O’Reilly Shine in Key Victories

Raymond opened the scoring after just 53 seconds of play and the Michigan team never looked back.

This victory allows the Wings to overtake the Pittsburgh Penguins in last place giving access to the playoffs in the East. Detroit has one more point than Pittsburgh with five games remaining.

Alex Lyon stopped 37 pucks in this victory. The Red Wings now have 84 points, moving them into second place among drafted teams in the Eastern Conference heading into National Hockey League night games.

Tage Thompson was the lone scorer for the Sabres. He scored his 29th goal of the season on a power play in the second half of the first period. He has scored a goal in his last three games.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 21 saves for the Sabres, who have lost three of four games against the Red Wings this season.

Kirill Kaprizov had two goals and an assist, rookie goalie Jesper Wallstedt recorded his first NHL shutout and the Minnesota Wild blanked the Chicago Blackhawks 4-0.

Wallstedt, who allowed seven goals on 34 shots in his NHL debut against the Dallas Stars on Jan. 10, stopped 24 pucks for the shutout in his first return to the Wild net. The Blackhawks were shut out for a 13th time this season, a Bettman league record.

The victory allowed the Wild to maintain a slim hope of participating in the playoffs. The team holds 83 points with five games remaining, but the Vegas Golden Knights and Nashville Predators, who find themselves in the last two playoff spots in the Western Conference, both had 92 points.

The Wild scored three goals in the second period. Kaprizov began the offensive push by threading the needle on the power play to reach the 40-goal plateau for a third straight season.

Marco Rossi beat Blackhawks goalie Arvid Soderblom and Frédérick Gaudreau added a goal about six minutes later. Kaprizov completed the score in the final third.

Wallstedt, who is a first-round pick of the Wild in 2021, has had it pretty easy in net. The most dangerous shot came from Alex Vlasic’s stick in the second period.

Soderblom finished the game with 33 saves.

Andersen stands against another opponent

Frederik Andersen made 23 saves and the Carolina Hurricanes blanked the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-0.

It was the third shutout in seven games for Andersen, who returned to winning ways after suffering his first loss in eight outings since his return to action last month.

Andrei Svechnikov, Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen moved the strings for the Hurricanes, who won for the fourth time in their last five games.

The Hurricanes were able to celebrate with their fans during this last home game this season. The team is already assured of having home ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs.

Malcolm Subban made his debut this season and stopped 32 shots in front of the Blue Jackets, who were shut out for the fifth time this season.

O’Reilly makes the difference

Ryan O’Reilly scored the decisive shootout goal to help the Nashville Predators defeat the New Jersey Devils 3-2.

Roman Josi and Luke Evangelista scored for the Predators, and Filip Forsberg and O’Reilly each had two assists.

Jack Hughes and Chris Tierney scored for the Devils in regulation.

Evangelista’s power play goal with 7:15 left in the third period tied the score at 2-2.

The Devils, who scored a season-high 112 points last season, won for a second straight night but are currently outside of a playoff spot in the East with just four games remaining.

Tierney’s fourth goal gave New Jersey a 2-1 lead on an assist from Tomas Nosek at 2:11 of the second period.

Jake Allen stopped 29 shots for the Devils. He entered the game after starter Kaapo Kahkonen left the game with an undisclosed injury after Josi scored on a slap shot at 8:39 of the first period. He left the ice with the coach’s help after stopping four shots.

Kahkonen nevertheless returned to the Devils bench at the start of the second period.

Juuse Saros made 23 saves for Nashville.

Hughes gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead with his 27th goal of the season on an assist from his brother Luke Hughes. With this pass, Luke Hughes set the Devils record for most points (45) by a rookie defenseman.

New Jersey center Curtis Lazar was out with an upper-body injury. According to Devils interim coach Travis Green, he could miss the remainder of the season. He was injured in the second period of Saturday’s game in Ottawa.

The Coyotes win the annual series against the Sharks

Lawson Crouse, Nick Schmaltz and Clayton Keller each had a goal and an assist, and the Arizona Coyotes beat the San Jose Sharks 5-2.

With the game tied 2-2 in the third, Dylan Guenther scored just under five minutes into the period. Keller added an insurance goal with a slap shot at 14:13, and Schmaltz scored into an empty net.

Liam O’Brien also scored for Arizona while goalkeeper Connor Ingram made 25 saves.

Luke Kunin and Henry Thrun replied for San Jose. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 23 shots in the loss.

The Coyotes get off to a good start on their five-game road trip before finishing the season at home against the Edmonton Oilers. The Coyotes are 10-8 in their last 18 games. The Coyotes swept their annual series against the Sharks for the second time in team history.

The Sharks have lost 12 of their last 14 games.

Four points from Thomas against the Ducks

Robert Thomas had a goal and three assists, and the St. Louis Blues won by a landslide over the Anaheim Ducks, 6-5 in a shootout.

Jordan Kyrou provided three assists and scored the only goal in the play-off, while Jordan Binnington made 33 saves for the Blues (41-32-5), who had lost their last two games, including a setback of 3 -2 in overtime against San Jose on Saturday.

The Blues’ chances of reaching the playoffs remain very low; with four games to play, they are five points behind the Vegas Golden Knights, holders of the last place reserved for a drafted club in the West.

Matthew Kessel followed suit by also opening his counter in the Bettman circuit, in his 35th game in a Blues uniform, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.
