NHL: The Canadiens face the Flames in Calgary

RDS and the RDS.ca present the game between the Canadiens and the Flames.

SUMMARY

The Montreal Canadiens kick off their four-game road trip out west with a stop in Calgary, where they visit the Flames.

The Canadians lead 2-1 in the third period.

Cole Caufield took advantage of the power play to break the tie in the third period on a pass from Nick Suzuki.

The Canadiens were on the power play following a spat between Josh Anderson and Jacob Markstrom. The Flames goaltender slashed Anderson, who was trying to get ahead of the Flames players to prevent a disallowed clearance. Anderson went to blame Markstrom and only Andrew Mangiapane was sent to jail after he attacked the Canadiens winger to help his goaltender.

Promoted to Sean Monahan’s line in the absence of Brendan Gallagher, Juraj Slafkovsky opened the scoring after just 13 seconds into the first period.

For his first game against his former team, Martin St-Louis delegated Monahan and his wingers Josh Anderson and Slafkovsky for the initial face-off. Monahan got away partially in the first seconds, which provoked the aggressive intervention of goalkeeper Jacob Markstrom. Slafkovsky then took advantage of the situation to break the ice with his fourth goal.

It’s the Canadiens’ earliest goal in a game since Brian Gionta scored 11 seconds into the game against the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 2, 2010.

The Flames controlled most of the game after Slafkovsky’s goal but needed 25 shots to get past Jake Allen as Elias Lindholm tied the game on assists from Jonathan Huberdeau and Tyler Toffoli with 29 seconds on the dial in second.

Moments earlier, Slafkovsky had come close to making it 2-0 Canadians following a Flames turnover at the Montreal blue line, but his shot hit the post to the left of Markstrom.

Upcoming updates.
