Its purchases make less noise than the studios bought out with billions of dollars by Xbox or PlayStation. But Nintendo continues to build an unparalleled entertainment empire.

There have been studios under the Big N flag as recently SRD or Next Level Games last year, but the firm has always moderated its ambitions to this game and does not seek to compete with the competition. Nintendo has also invested in a park bearing the image of its heroes in partnership with Universal to bring life to Super Nintendo World in Osaka (Japan), after two spaces under license in the Universal parks of Orlando and Los Angeles.

A few years ago, the company’s general manager, Shinya Takahashi, advanced to Figaro what ” Nintendo (was) an entertainment company, not a tech company“. A very clear course for the Japanese giant, a century-old company that started in playing cards and does not want to be confined to video games or its Switch console.

Zelda soon on the big screen?

And one area was still missing from Nintendo: cinema. Admittedly, many of its flagship licenses have had more or less successful adaptations on the big screen. But the company was not necessarily responsible. Pokemon: Detective Pikachu animated and live-action film has been very successful at the box office and it has undoubtedly given ideas as many projects are announced as a new filmMario Brosexpected for spring 2023.

By the end of 2020, Nintendo had hinted that a project to adapt the Zelda license was under consideration. Many others could see the light of day soon since the official announcement of the takeover of Dynamo Pictures last week.

If this name means nothing to you, it is however not a newcomer. Dynamo Pictures has worked behind animations for numerous video game licenses ( Resident Evil ,Death Stranding, Metroid : Other M, Persona 5…),but also movies (Aya and the Witch) and short films (Pikmin Short Movies). His new mission will be todevelop visual content using Nintendo intellectual property“. In other words, adaptations in animation version will rain, for the big screen as for video games.

And as a sign of inclination towards the 7th Art, Nintendo even immediately renamed its new acquisition Nintendo Pictures Co. Ltd. The amount of the transaction was not disclosed. The father of Super Mario and Zelda offers himself the means to create his own cutscenes, but also films or animated series around his own brands and virtual reality attractions. But not yet, however, enough to compete with upcoming American blockbusters.
