No case of Marburg virus disease has been confirmed in Cameroon to date, according to the national report presented Monday by the Center for the Coordination of Public Health Emergency Operations (CCOUSP).
Analyzing the situation between February 27 and March 5, this public body made no note of the 285 people tested during passenger screening activities at the five border entry points of Equatorial Guinea.
The country’s authorities in February restricted the movement of populations on the border with Equatorial Guinea, following the occurrence of a hemorrhagic fever that caused several “unexplained deaths” in a few days in the Equatorial Guinean province of Kié-Ntem.
Faced with the high risk of importation of this disease, the government, with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and an American partner, has initiated actions to investigate contact cases, in collaboration with Equatorial Guinean officials.
The response also consists of intensifying community awareness activities in areas at risk, without forgetting the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance.
Marburg virus disease, serious and often fatal, is a hemorrhagic disease caused by the Marburg virus. The Marburg virus is usually transmitted to humans by fruit bats, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
