Denmark has near the damaged Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline recovered a mysterious object in the Baltic Sea, which is believed to be a smoke buoy. The maneuvers under the supervision of the army took place at a depth of 73 meters, the country’s energy authority said on Wednesday. “The investigations indicate that it is an empty smoke buoy.” The object did not pose a security risk.
Putin suspects connection with explosion
According to the information, a representative of the Nord Stream 2 operating company, whose main shareholder is the Russian energy company Gazprom, was also present during the salvage operation.
Two weeks ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin first pointed out the mysterious object in a television report in connection with the attacks on the gas pipeline. “Specialists believe that it may be an antenna for receiving a signal to activate an explosive device,” said the Kremlin chief.
Who is behind the attack?
A total of four explosions in September in the economic zones of Sweden and Denmark in the Baltic Sea caused several leaks in the Nord Stream pipelines, which were built to transport Russian gas to Germany. The pipelines were not operating at the time of the explosions but contained gas. According to Sweden, sabotage is behind the incident. Accordingly, explosive residues were detected.
Russia, among others, was suspected of being behind the alleged sabotage. According to media reports, however, the investigations into the explosions also led to Ukraine.
