not impossible, but unlikely

Carey Price has been back for almost a week and in two starts the goaltender has done very well. He maintains a 2.02 goals-against average and a .918 save average. He is one of the main candidates for the Vézina Trophy in 2021-2022.

If his two starts, against good clubs anyway, do not represent a large sample, we can really be encouraged by his performance. He moves well, he’s not often out of position and his work around his net is impeccable. His exits from his net allow a faster recovery of the attack and better zone exits.

Advanced stats, too, prove my point.

In short, the Carey Price of the beautiful days seems to be back. But not too fast! As I mentioned, the sample is very small and in the words of Darren Dreger, it’s still too early to tell what the keeper would be worth on the exchange market. Especially with a salary of $10.5 million annually for another four seasons after this one, teams will be very careful before acquiring his services.

It is not yet known whether the goalkeeper will automatically face the Flyers tomorrow, but by the end of the season, he should play a lot to show other teams his “new value”.

Also according to Dreger, it is not impossible that Price will be traded this summer (and that Hughes does not need to withhold salary), but it is very unlikely.

$10.5 million for four years is a lot of money and for a long time. And the number of teams that can afford the goalkeeper is limited.

In his segment, Dreger mentioned the Avalanche as a potential destination. The team still has a big window of opportunity to win over Lord Stanley and with Price in fine form, they could be the next dynasty in the NHL. I have nothing against Darcy Kuemper, but Price is Price.

Also according to Dreger, Kent Hughes would not necessarily need to withhold his goalkeeper’s salary, but he will have to acquire some heavy contracts that Joe Sakic will want to part with. For example: Erik Johnson ($6M until 2023-2024) and Samuel Girard ($5M until 2026-2027).

If the desire to win top honors is the most important criterion for Price, the geographical destination is also. At 34, I’m sure he and his wife will want to be closer to the family. Carey’s is in British Columbia and Angela’s is in Washington (the state, not the city). Colorado is not too far from there, Vancouver could be a potential destination and Seattle, we forget that (Ron Francis ignored him in the last expansion draft). Price could accept a trade sending him to Los Angeles as well. California is relatively close to Washington and Vancouver and the Kings have a good young team that could make it to the playoffs in the years to come.

A meeting between Price, Danault and Bergevin would be possible.

Again, I launch potential destinations, but Price must agree to go there, he who counts on a non-movement clause.

Will Price be traded this summer though? The chances are slim, but it is possible.

A lot of

– Patrice Bergeron in Montreal: possible?

– Time is running out for the Canucks.

– Good news in Florida.

– New in the repechage: only the last 11 teams will be able to win the lottery.

– Ah OK.
