NRW/Holland – A Dutch authority stopped the sale of a “global market leader” last week (February 14). Over 100 dealers in North Rhine-Westphalia are affected by the bicycle ban. Due to safety risks, the Dutch company Babboe announced the “Tijdelijke stop verkoop Babboe bakfietsen”.

“Temporary suspension of sales of cargo bikes,” reads the translated message from Babboe. The Spiegel already reported on the ban on the well-known bicycle brand. The company says it sees itself as the market leader for cargo bikes and is particularly popular with families. These are also affected in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Babboe announced on its German website that it would “cease the sale of all cargo bikes.” This also results in the recall of eight models – but why exactly are there the tough measures?

According to its own information, the Dutch Food and Consumer Goods Safety Authority (NVWA) informed the company of safety risks when using the cargo bikes. The NVWA itself speaks of the risk of serious injuries – for good reason.
An investigation has shown that the frame might break in certain models. Such an accident might have serious consequences, especially in heavy traffic. In North Rhine-Westphalia, too, cargo bikes are often used to ride or cycle with children. The bicycle brand is now facing severe consequences (more news from Holland at RUHR24).

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the sales stop and recall are likely to affect the company’s partner shops in particular. The bicycle company shows over 100 dealers in North Rhine-Westphalia on its homepage. Recently, some Dutch supermarkets also stopped an old shopping tradition.
