ÖAMTC advises those affected by the VW emissions scandal to urgently update the software

Motor vehicle authorities set a deadline and threaten to revoke vehicle registration

Vienna (OTS) Many registration owners whose vehicles are affected by the VW diesel scandal are currently receiving mail with potentially far-reaching consequences: Due to an instruction from the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection (BMK), the motor vehicle authorities are calling for a necessary software update to be carried out. If the manufacturer does not immediately provide confirmation that the test has been carried out, the vehicle registration should be revoked. All those license holders who have not yet had the software update carried out will be asked to do so.

“Anyone who cannot submit confirmation of the update by the deadline runs the risk of losing their vehicle registration overnight and having to give up their license plate,” says ÖAMTC traffic lawyer Matthias Wolf. In Austria, thousands of vehicles are affected by the VW diesel scandal. The current letters of formal notice are aimed in particular at registered owners of vehicles with an EA 189 engine of the oldest type.

“In any case, affected registration owners should immediately contact one of the manufacturer’s authorized workshops and have the software updated,” recommends Wolf. “If the authority receives the confirmation on time, there are no further consequences to be feared.”

The ÖAMTC has heard reports from those affected that the update can lead to higher fuel consumption and faster wear of certain parts. “In any case, you should insist in the workshop that the latest software version is installed,” advises the ÖAMTC lawyer in conclusion.
