ÖFB women miss the sensation: bitter 2:3 against Germany

The ÖFB national team shocked Germany with a lightning start in the European Championship qualifier in Linz. Eileen Campbell scored twice, but in the end the favorites prevailed.

The Linzer Gugl could have become the Cordoba for Austria’s footballers. Against Germany on Friday at the start of the European Championship qualification, after a 2-0 lead, there was still a 2-3 defeat for Irene Fuhrmann’s selection. The ÖFB national team has to wait for a win against its big neighbor just as much as for a complete success against a top five nation in the world rankings.

With six current and four former Germany legionnaires, Austria took on the duel against number five in the world rankings. Captain Sarah Puntigam and Celina Degen as a double six were supposed to compensate for the painful loss of Sarah Zadrazil (torn muscle fiber). Cologne legionnaire Degen demonstrated the required courage early on and scored the first shot just over the top (6th).

The second dangerous action brought the much celebrated 1-0 lead. Eileen Campbell took control of the ball, soloed through the DFB defense and finished on her own (11th). Horst Hrubesch’s team made an impact – and Campbell followed up in the style of the former “header monster”: the Freiburg striker heaved a free kick from Barbara Dunst into the goal to make it 2-0 (16th).

Austria’s team played like a frenzy during this phase. The unsettled German defense not only looked bad when they conceded the second goal, Giulia Gwinn and Co. practically begged for more goals with major mistakes. The connecting goal, which was preceded by a careless loss of the ball by Marina Georgieva, was all the more unnecessary. Klara Bühl struck coldly from the edge of the penalty area (39′).

2:3 from a controversial penalty

It was a wake-up call for the Germans, who came back with much better control after the break. With quick consequences: After just under four minutes they combined through the ÖFB defense, Klara Bühl scored with a low shot to equalize. A controversial penalty gave Germany the 3-2 lead. Manuela Zinsberger had already defended against Laura Freigang in a one-on-one, and the striker ran into her. The Swedish referee pointed to the penalty spot. Giulia Gwinn scored safely (63′).

A near-own goal from Gwinn shortly after her goal remained the best chance for Austria. Campbell and Co. had to seek salvation on the counterattack, but that was unsuccessful.

Fuhrmann: “We totally dominated”

Irene Fuhrmann said: “This is one of the bitterest football evenings for us. Because we totally dominated Germany in the first half. But they were incredibly effective and scored two goals with two shots. The penalty was questionable. It doesn’t help, we have nothing taken.”

Eileen Campbell (Austria double goalscorer): “We gave up a 2-0 lead and losing 3-2 is bitter. But we managed to annoy the opponent. We’ll take that with us. We have “We applied a lot of pressure in the first half, that was the plan and it worked well. Maybe the batteries were empty at the end. Things might look different if we go into the break with a 2-0 lead.”

Goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger said: “We have to get the three points here, but we have zero points. That’s annoying. From my point of view, the penalty wasn’t worth giving. I didn’t touch it once. But that doesn’t matter now Goal counted.” There is no VAR for women in European Championship qualification. Zinsberger was combative: “That was the first game, there are more. The Austrian nation has seen what we are capable of. Hold on. The team boss will set us up optimally again against Poland. We will give 100 percent and see you “Fight to drop. Then we’ll come home with three points.”

Praise from Hrubesch

DFB team boss Horst Hrubesch had to admit that his team looked bad for a long time: “We had to make sure we got to halftime. You don’t necessarily have to give the penalty. At the end of the day we got what we wanted. But we had to score a hundred Percent for it. We should have played what the Austrians played from the first minute. Then we wouldn’t have had any problems.”

Poland is Austria’s next opponent in Gdynia on Tuesday. The Poles lost 3-0 in Iceland on Friday. Iceland will be visiting Austria on May 31st, the venue will be Ried.
