Officially.. Biden declares Qatar a “major non-NATO ally”

US President Joe Biden announced the issuance of an executive order designating Qatar as a major non-NATO ally.

Biden said in his presidential decree, which was published by the White House via SignedHis decision is made under the authority vested in him as President in accordance with the Constitution and laws of the United States of America and pursuant to Section 517 of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961.

The US President officially confirmed that the State of Qatar has become a major non-NATO ally of the United States.

And Biden had said, last January, in light of a visit by the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to Washington, DC, that he would inform Congress of his intention to include Qatar as a major non-member ally of NATO.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said at the time that this decision would open a whole new set of opportunities for defense relations between Washington, Doha and other allies.
