ÖGK: Well known – the dark side of the sun

Without the sun there would be no life. For example, we convert the majority of our vitamin D requirements with sunlight – important for bone formation, but also for our mental balance. It’s no coincidence that many people feel less balanced during the darker months of the year and long for long, warm summer days. Of course: As is so often the case when sunbathing, it depends on the dose. The dangers to which our skin is exposed by the sun’s UV radiation should not be underestimated.

It is well known that skin type plays an important role in choosing the right sunscreen. The self-protection time for people with very light skin is a maximum of ten minutes, for people with dark complexion it can be 30 minutes or more. Rule of thumb: If you multiply the skin’s own protection time by the sun protection factor of the sunscreen, you get a good indication of how many “minutes of sunshine” per day are acceptable.

Tip: Apply cream 20 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun, then the protection in the skin will have fully developed. Don’t forget to protect your eyes with good sunglasses.

Particularly important: Children’s skin does not yet have a fully developed self-protection system, so the little ones should mainly stay in the shade, wear appropriate clothing including a hat and be protected with sun blockers that have a high sun protection factor.
With this in mind: Enjoy the summer with a sense of proportion – the sun also has its dark side…
