The largest oil companies received an incredible 195 billion dollars in 2022. Where the super profits come from, why they are controversial and what a profit tax would change.
2022 was a dream year for the big oil companies. The five largest Western companies in the industry have just published their annual balance sheets – and presented record profits.
After Exxon, Chevron, Shell and BP, Total was the last company to present its figures this Wednesday. According to this, the companies together have a profit of around 195 billion dollars. That’s more than $6,100 per second.
