“Oldest dog of all time” was stripped of his title

There was no conclusive evidence to support the claim, the Guinness Book of Records said Thursday. Microchip data from the Portuguese pet registry Siac is of central importance.

When Bobi was chipped in 2022, no proof of age was necessary for a dog born before 2008. The animal lived in the 300-inhabitant village of Conqueiros, about 150 kilometers north of Lisbon. “Based on this microchip data, we have no conclusive evidence to definitively prove Bobi’s date of birth,” said Guinness director Mark McKinley, according to the statement. The investigation was launched after veterinarians and other experts raised concerns both privately and publicly, and media investigations also raised doubts. As a result, the Guinness title was temporarily revoked in January. “Of course, as with any record, we are happy to review any new evidence if we receive it,” McKinley said.

Determining the new record holder will be difficult. “It will be a long time before the spread of microchips around the world catches up with pet ownership, particularly older pets.” Until then, the Guinness Book of Records requires documentary evidence for all years of a pet’s life. “We will continue to seek statements from veterinarians and witnesses and will also consider microchip data if available,” McKinley said.
