Olympia 2022: Ski freestyler Jon Sallinen collides with a cameraman in the halfpipe qualification

Where there is triumph, tragedy is often not far away. This is especially true for the Olympic Games.

Jon Sallinen can sing a song about it after the halfpipe qualification of the ski freestylers.

The 21-year-old Finn started his run very promisingly, but Sallinen misjudged his fifth jump and was unable to avoid a cameraman who had been following the run from the top balustrade of the slope.

Both the Finn and the cameraman lay down for a few moments after the collision, but were able to stand on their own feet again in the end. Sallinen finished his run, with 18.00 out of a possible 100 points, the youngster took last place in the first competition.

According to initial media reports, both participants escaped without injuries. “I wasn’t sure if I should even try my second run after the crash,” Sallinen described the scene after qualifying: “I hope the cameraman is fine. I landed right on top of him.”

The Finn then apologized for his driving mistake, the cameraman was able to follow the rest of the competition normally.

Sallinen, a first-time Winter Olympics competitor, failed to improve his score on the second attempt and finished 25th in runs with a total of 18.50 points.

Finne could not meet high goals

The 21-year-old debutant went into the halfpipe with high expectations. “The goal is to get to the final,” Sallinen was quoted as saying on the Finnish Olympic Committee’s Twitter profile ahead of the competition.

Correspondingly disappointed, he will now start his journey home to Finland.

After his moment of shock in the halfpipe, the 21-year-old will probably be able to overlook it.
