Oman’s 10th Shura Council Elections: Why Did All 32 Women Candidates Lose?

Muscat: 32 women contested in the elections to the 10th Shura Council in Oman, but all of them lost. In many governorates, more women than men voted, but not a single woman was elected to the 90-member council.

The Ministry of Home Affairs released the results of the online voting through the app. There were 843 candidates including 32 women. Out of 7,53,690 people registered in the voter list, 4,96,279 people exercised their consent. The polling was 65.88 percent. Compared to the 2019 elections, there is a huge increase in voting.

All election-related procedures including voter registration, candidate registration, election campaigns, polling and filing of appeals are completed online through the app. 61 of those who succeeded as members of the Shura Council are newcomers. That means 64 percent of the total council members are new members.

Northern Bathinda Governorate recorded the highest number of votes. There is 10 days time to file appeals against election results. The Election Committee will decide on the appeals within 15 days. Chairman of the Election Committee, Sheikh Al Mokhtar Abdullah Al Harti, announced in a press conference that the Speaker of the Shura Council and two deputies will be elected in November.
