The 61st Viennale ended with the awards ceremony on Halloween, October 31st. Anyone who expected to see the gala guests in costume was disappointed. That’s too much commercial US import for the Viennale. Instead, the festival aims to be a place of discovery and impresses with a select program of mostly independent films from all over the world. It worked wonderfully this year: 75,300 people visited the festival cinemas, and occupancy was 76 percent, higher than last time. There were 73,700 visitors in 2022 and 58,200 in 2021.
