On Tuesday, a second egg was laid in the eagle’s nest in Durbe (+VIDEO)

Yesterday afternoon, a pair of White-tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla / Jūras ērglis / White-tailed Eagle) occasionally left the nest for a few minutes, leaving an egg. Mr. H actively brought dry grass and tufts of reeds to line the base of the nest and cover the eggs.

The first egg of this season was laid on March 23rd. Compared to the previous two years, this spring the first egg was laid much later than usual. For example, last year the first egg was laid on March 8, and in 2022 – on March 15.

This year, nest owner Milda and her new ringed partner, H 492, or Mr. H, had to build a new nest after the previous one was destroyed in a hurricane last fall.

From February 19 to March 23, both birds built a nest of 917 branches of varying sizes. The largest builder was Mr. H, who wove 739 branches into the nest, and Milda, according to the inventory made on the Dabasdati.lv forum, had 178 branches. Even after laying an egg, Mr. H replenishes the nest with new branches and tufts of dry grass.

Both birds hatch eggs in shifts. They were disturbed by the crows living next door, who were watching with interest the construction of the nest and checking whether the eagles already had an egg in the nest.

Also, twice the eagles were frightened by human conversations near the nest. Ornithologist Janis Kuse urges people going into the forest to remain quiet and not try to approach the nest if they notice it, and to quickly leave the area if birds with agitated behavior are observed. In this way, people can ensure successful bird breeding.

As reported, the house of eagles in Kurzeme, Durbe parish, is the most popular live broadcast of the LFP. The nest is located on the top of an old spruce tree as tall as a nine-story building. This nest is a veteran of live broadcasts and has been monitored since 2015. You can comment on what is happening in the nest on the forum Dabasdati.lv in Latvian and on the forum Looduskalender.ee in English.
