The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on the E34 near Waaslandhaven-Oost. Two vehicles collided. Both drivers had to be extricated.
A 39-year-old man died, while another, 46, was taken to hospital in critical condition.
The damage following the shock is considerable and the roadway was blocked for a good part of the evening.
