OÖN-Börsespiel: These are the winners

Almost 24 percent profit in times of high inflation, geopolitical tensions and the resulting uncertainty on the markets: Bremen’s Ingo Mews had everything in view and finally won the OÖN stock market game.

The 57-year-old German relied mostly on US stocks: “Paper from chip manufacturers such as AMD or Nvidia have increased in value in recent weeks,” says Mews in the OÖN interview.

He didn’t expect a win. “I’ve been playing enthusiastically for a number of years now, and admittedly I’ve rarely been successful,” says Mews.

The decision by the US Federal Reserve to raise the key interest rate by another quarter of a percentage point threw everything up again shortly before the end. Mews, who had never topped the rankings before, eventually took first place. “This shows that trading financial products always involves a bit of luck,” says the full-time web designer.

US stocks from the technology sector also helped the 4AFET of the Linz technical center HTL Paul-Hahn-Straße to win the class ranking. “Since the topic of artificial intelligence is currently going through the roof, we have secured many Microsoft shares,” says Judith Schreibmüller, who teaches economics and law at the school and supervised the class. Microsoft was particularly attractive due to its investments in the AI software ChatGPT.

Participation in the stock market game has a long tradition at the Linz technical center. This year, five classes from Paul-Hahn-Strasse are again among the top ten. “It’s important for us to bring the world of financial markets closer to the students. The stock market game offers a good opportunity to do so every year,” says Schreibmüller.

“Inform yourself!”

In the student classification, 18-year-old Zakir Jawadi from Linz won the race with a gain of 17.08 percent. “I’ve been dealing with stocks and finance for a long time, and I was able to put my knowledge to the test in the stock market game,” says Zawadi.

Zawadi particularly remembers one moment of the stock market game: “I sold the shares in the Facebook group Meta just in time before the price fell.” That showed him that you always have to be up to date when trading shares. Zawadi also has a tip for investors of the same age: “Don’t just buy big names, but find out about all listed companies.”

The winners of the 21st OÖN stock exchange game

Ingo Mews from Bremen has been playing in the OÖN stock market game for several years. After it hadn’t been that successful before, the web designer was able to win the race this year. It was only shortly before the end that Mews, also due to the Fed interest rate decision, took the lead for the first time and didn’t let it take him away. Mews wins the grand prize, a Citroen C3.

school classes

Participation in the stock exchange game has now become a tradition at the Linz technical center at the HTL Paul-Hahn-Straße. This is also a credit to the teaching staff. Teacher Judith Schreibmüller: “By observing stock market movements, the students learn a lot. For us, it’s important to bring young people closer to the world of finance.” In this respect, Schreibmüller and her colleagues are apparently successful – five of the ten best classes are from Paul-Hahn-Strasse. The 4AFET, the winning class, can look forward to a visit to a LASK home game in the new Raiffeisen Arena.
