OpenAI Hardware Roadmap: AI Smartphone and Smart Speaker Details Revealed

OpenAI is expanding beyond software into dedicated hardware, developing a screenless portable AI smart speaker alongside former Apple design chief Jony Ive for an early 2027 release, followed by an agent-centric smartphone targeted for production by the first half of 2027.

The Jony Ive Collaboration and the Screenless Home Companion

The hardware roadmap has sharpened considerably, centering on a portable, screenless smart speaker engineered in collaboration with Jony Ive. OpenAI acquired Ive’s startup io Products for $6.5 billion, a deal that seeded an internal hardware division with more than 400 former Apple employees.

This device breaks away from traditional voice-activated home hubs. According to early internal briefings, CEO Sam Altman described the prototype to employees as “the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen.” The speaker features a rechargeable battery for portability between rooms, an onboard camera to interpret its physical surroundings, and mechanical elements designed to move independently to project a sense of life.

Operating without a screen, the device relies on ChatGPT and GPT-Live frameworks to manage smart home accessories, answer open-ended queries, stream media, and handle messaging. Over time, the software adapts to user routines to become increasingly proactive. OpenAI explicitly separates this device from traditional categories, indicating that products like Apple’s HomePod and HomePod mini do not serve as direct architectural or functional comparisons. The speaker is slated for an early 2027 release window, priced between $200 and $300, after missing initial internal targets for a release this year.

Beyond the home environment, OpenAI is building a custom mobile device. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo outlined the architecture in April, describing it as an “AI agent phone” centered around a continuous, context-aware interface rather than traditional application silos. Kuo argues that smartphones remain the only hardware class capturing a comprehensive real-time state, aggregating precise location data, physical activity, communication channels, and immediate situational context.

MediaTek is positioned as the sole silicon provider, while Luxshare Precision Industry is slated as the exclusive manufacturing partner. Furthermore, Sunny Optical has secured component orders for two distinct OpenAI hardware products, primarily supplying advanced camera modules.

The standout technical specification is a specialized image signal processor featuring an enhanced High Dynamic Range (HDR) pipeline. This subsystem is engineered to improve real-world environment sensing via the camera, feeding visual data directly into dual integrated AI processors capable of handling simultaneous vision and language inferencing tasks. Mass production timelines have accelerated; while initially slated for 2028, schedules have moved up to the first half of 2027, driven by OpenAI’s upcoming IPO and escalating hardware competition. Current supply chain projections estimate combined shipments of 30 million units across 2027 and 2028.

The Broader Ecosystem and Corporate Collision With Apple

The aggressive recruitment of more than 400 former Apple personnel—including designers Evans Hankey, Tang Tan, Scott Cannon, and Vision Products Group leader Paul Meade—has fundamentally altered the competitive landscape between Silicon Valley giants. Apple responded to the talent drain by issuing retention bonuses reaching up to $400,000 in restricted stock units for its iPhone Product Design team.

The corporate rivalry has since escalated into active litigation. Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on July 10 over the alleged theft of trade secrets. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the legal action is already frictioning OpenAI’s hardware timeline by cooling interest among prospective Apple engineering recruits and making component suppliers cautious. OpenAI has formally stated it has “no interest in other companies’ trade secrets.”

Behind the speaker and smartphone, the broader product roadmap includes smart glasses, a smart lamp, and potentially wireless earbuds, though these sit further out in development and carry higher cancellation risks. Concurrently, Apple is advancing its own hardware portfolio—including rumored smart glasses, camera-equipped AirPods, an AI pendant, and an advanced smart home hub powered by enhanced Siri capabilities. This convergence sets up a direct, multi-category collision course between the two companies as agentic AI shifts firmly from cloud software to edge silicon.
