Only less than a week after the arrival of macOS Sonoma in final version, OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.0 significantly expands support for the new system. If Apple asks for at least a 2018 MacBook, a 2018 Mac mini or a 2019 iMac, the community project shatters generational barriers.
Thanks to this software from the Hackintosh scene which profoundly modifies the operating system, it becomes possible to install macOS Sonoma on no less than 83 Macs shunned by Apple. The compatibility list goes back to MacBooks from 2008, models launched under Mac OS X Leopard, you know.
Using OpenCore Legacy Patcher has become more accessible lately thanks to a simplified graphical interface and welcome explanations for each advanced option. Reading of la documentation (in English) nevertheless remains essential, as does checking the compatibility of your Mac.
On this subject, a significant incompatibility is to be noted for the MacBook Pro 2016 and 2017. Apple having abandoned the management of the T1 chip, the functionalities linked to them – Touch ID, Apple Pay and the iCloud keychain – are inoperative under Sonoma. The brilliant developers of OpenCore Legacy Patcher are working to find a solution, but for the moment it is impossible to say when this obstacle will be overcome. Also pay attention to graphical problems which persist with old GPU.
A backup is also essential before applying an update using OpenCore Legacy Patcher, as bugs specific to certain machines can escape the vigilance of contributors.
