Opening of the 6th Spectrum Management Conference

The sixth edition of the Spectrum Management Conference of the Middle East and North Africa region was held between June 30 and 1is July, in the presence of regulators, experts, and other players in the telecoms and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector, gathered around a common objective: to reach a common position on the management of the spectrum in the Middle East and North Africa region. Over a hundred participants from different countries in the region came together in person to discuss key spectrum topics for the region and beyond.

The Spectrum Management Conference of the Middle East and North Africa region aims to open the debate on major concerns such as the future of the 6GHz band in the Arab region, the development prospects concerning the use of C-band, as well as how emerging technologies meet the needs of today’s users. It was also an opportunity to start shaping the contours of the future of the 470-694 MHz band while balancing the needs of all key users and the post-5G trajectory, providing the spectrum to power the next generation of wireless connectivity.

As the African continent becomes increasingly connected, along with the Arab region, spectrum management is at the heart of the solution to ensure consistent, affordable and equitable connectivity. Reaching consensus on spectrum management is critical to meeting these challenges and closing future gaps.

« The radio spectrum is the most important element of the telecommunications sector. The experience of the United Arab Emirates shows that we must have an appropriate frequency plan and regulation in order to meet the future needs of the telecommunications sector.“, explained Tariq Al Awadhi, President of the Arab Spectrum Management Group (ASMG).

« The ASMG team in the Arab region is very active with the ITU. We have a strong team within ASMG and we are all proud of it. The preparations for the WRC are now going very well. Over the past three days, we have had constructive meetings and updated our positions for WRC 23 agenda items. ITU-R studies, submitting their contributions. » « It is effective participation“, he concluded.

« We have taken an important step in the preparation of WRC-23. ITU-R working groups and task groups complete technical studies for each agenda item. said Mario Maniewicz, Director of the Radiocommunication Bureau, ITU.

As WRC-23 approaches, positive engagement on midband solutions for IMT will provide essential support for spectrum harmonization and provide clear technical guidance to regulators. Coordinated regional decisions will lead to a CMR that will enable the future of 5G and support wider adoption of broadband by increasing capacity and reducing costs.

Asmae Lachhab, Senior Marketing and Solution Manager Huawei Northern Africa, echoed these issues, emphasizing that ” 5G development is accelerating worldwide, most countries have adopted 5G strategically to complete their national digital transition in the coming decade. Governments are strongly recommended to implement favorable industrial and spectrum policies to facilitate the evolution of 5G in the Middle East and North Africa region »
