Operation Marhaba: the results of the first phase

Operation “Marhaba” 2022 recorded, in its first phase, from June 15 to August 15, a drop of 13.3% in the number of passengers and 9.7% of vehicles compared to 2019, the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic. This emerges from data from the General Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Spanish Ministry of the Interior. These figures relate to passengers bound for Morocco, Algeria and the ports of Sebta and Melilia.

In total, until August 15, 349,735 vehicles (-9.7%) and 1,430,340 passengers (-13.3%) passed through North African ports. Of the total, 240,730 vehicles and 1,076,312 passengers opted for the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa.

According to the ports of destination, those of Morocco were the destination of 62% of the passengers, which represents 16.3% than the percentage recorded in 2019. 3% of the passengers traveled to Algeria. For its part, Sebta welcomed 23% of travellers, an increase of 3.9 percentage points compared to 2019. Finally, Melilla remained at a similar level having recorded 12% of overall traffic.
