The film Oppenheimer won seven trophies, including best picture, at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

The director of this biographical drama, Christopher Nolan, finally received his first Oscar after eight nominations. He thanked his wife, Emma Thomas, producer of all his films and also producer of all their children, he said.

He also highlighted the short history of cinema, imagining how much we still have to experience through this art: The films are a little over 100 years old. Imagine what it was like 100 years after painting or theater. We don’t know where this great adventure will take us, but knowing that you think I’m part of it touches me deep in my heart.

His film about the invention of the atomic bomb also allowed Cillian Murphy to walk away with the Oscar for best actor and Robert Downey Jr. to be crowned best supporting actor. We made a film about the creator of the atomic bomb, so, in return, I would like to dedicate my prize to all those who work to make peace in the world, declared the best actor.

Emma Stone was crowned best actress for her role as Bella Baxter in Poor Things (Poor creatures), by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos. At 35, the American has joined the closed circle of actresses who have won the ultimate award twice, alongside legends like Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda and Jodie Foster. She had already won an award in 2017 for her role as a young actress in search of glory in the musical La La Land.

The film Poor Things was also rewarded in the categories of sets, costumes and makeup and hairstyles. Da’Vine Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Holdovers (Those who remain).

Some lengths

The ceremony, which started at 7 p.m. rather than 8 p.m. this year, was still marked by some downtime. Host Jimmy Kimmel made fun of the gala’s length a few times. Some viewers wrote to us to tell us that they missed the beginning because we started earlier. So we’re going to start from the beginning, he joked a little after 8 p.m.

Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas won the Oscar for best original song for What Was I Made For?written for the film Barbie. The duo was also rewarded for this song at the Golden Globes and at the Grammy evening.

Even if it is the only trophy to have been awarded to Greta Gerwig’s film, a good part of the jokes and sketches during the ceremony were based on references to the feature film.

The host of the evening spoke to Margot Robbie, the interpreter of Barbie, and to Ontarian Ryan Gosling, who was nominated in the category of best supporting actor for his interpretation of Ken: Ryan and Margot, if you don’t win an Oscar, you’ve already won the genetics lottery, he said.

Ryan Gosling performed the hit I’m Just Kensurrounded by the other performers of the male dolls in a large-scale choreography which managed to revive the end of the evening which lacked spice.

Among the highlights of the evening, time seemed to stand still for a few minutes during the presentation of the Oscar for best documentary, awarded to Mstyslav Chernov, Michelle Mizner and Raney Aronson-Rath for 20 Days in Mariupol, which recounts at a human level the first days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

This is the first Oscar in Ukrainian history, said director Mstyslav Tchernov, visibly moved. I’ll probably be the first person to say something like that, but I would have preferred not to win this Oscar, so I wouldn’t have to make this movie. He stressed the importance of never forgetting the people who lose their lives in their quest for freedom: Cinema forges memory and memory forges history.
