They demand sanctions for Morena senator for animal sacrifice in the Senate

MEXICO CITY.- Animal rights activists demonstrated in the vicinity of the Senate to demand sanctions against Adolfo Gomezsenator from Morena who organized and promoted the sacrifice of a chicken at the headquarters of the Legislative power.

“Many animal protection organizations and activists are gathered here to demand (…) that the senator be sanctioned,” he warned. Sofia Morinorganizer of the rally.

The activist described it as “incredible” that a person in public office gives that example to Mexicans when our country is in “the first places in animal abuse worldwide.”

The Morenoist legislator justified the animal sacrifice in the Senate by ensuring that it is part of an indigenous community whose uses and customs are protected by the Mexican Constitution.

In this regard, Sofía Morín said she was “completely respectful” of “several” traditions of the native Mexican communities but maintained that the animal rights movement “will not tolerate” animal abuse.

Animal sacrifice rejected in the Senate

The Autonomous Council of Native Peoples and Neighborhoods expressed its rejection of the sacrifice of a chicken at the legislative headquarters.

“Sacrificial acts in public spaces that are not sacred or consecrated for the development of our identity, cultural and ancestral practices contravene the constitutional pact to ‘maintain unity’,” says the Council.

Sofía Morín described as “very incongruous” that just in February the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced an initiative to prohibit animal abuse and two months later one of its senators carried out an animal sacrifice.

“We ask for the dismissal of the senator for having killed an animal in the Senate facilities […] It cannot be a place of animal sacrifice,” said PRI member Cynthia López at the demonstration today, Thursday.
