Ora-pro-nóbis is the fashionable plant. With leaves rich in proteins, with 17 to 29% of the macronutrient, in addition to fiber and vitamin C, the plant grows naturally in the Center-South regions of Brazil.

However, for those who know little about vegetation, it can be a challenge to know if there are any plants of the super plant close to home. The dark green leaves have a common appearance, so you need to pay attention to the other morphological characteristics to recognize it.

“Ora-pro-nóbis is perennial, that is, it lasts for many years and has a vine-like growth, similar to a fern, for example. To develop its maximum height, which reaches up to 10 meters, its branches need support — without them, the plant ends up being dispersed on the ground, like a bush”, explains agronomist Victor Pereira, from Brasília.

Two main characteristics help you recognize the plant. The presence of clusters of thorns on its branches is one of them. The other is that its leaves have a slime, known as mucilage, just like okra. This drool appears on fresh leaves, when broken, and is not toxic or allergenic — so crushing the leaf with your hands can be a good way to get rid of stubbornness.

The plant’s flowers are generally white, with an orange core and a pleasant odor (ora-pro-nóbis is one of bees’ favorite plants). Its fruits are small spheres, green when young and orange when ripe. They contain the seeds, which are quite rigid and dark.

If you found an ora-pro-nóbis in your neighborhood, know that it is not difficult to make a seedling from the plant. It is born both from the planting of seeds, which can be found inside the fruit, and through a process called stem cutting.

In general, the ora-pro-nóbis seedlings for sale are produced using this process. Stem cutting is the cutting of a piece of the plant stem with some leaves 15 to 30 cm long, which is planted in a little substrate.

“Cutting is a method of multiplication using parts of a mother plant, basically generating a clone of the other. The selection of the stem is made by searching for buds, small buds that can become new branches, to make the plant grow”, concludes the engineer.
