40 candles are worth celebrating! For Orange’s 40th anniversary in Caen (Calvados), not far from the Ornano stadium, France general manager Jean-François Fallacher was present on Tuesday October 10, 2023, along with international innovation director Bruno Zerbib.

I had my first job here, in Caen, for two years in 1992. There is a certain emotion for me and it has changed a lot, there were only fields around at the time!

More than 700 employees in Caen, a strategic site

With more than 700 employees in Caen, this Orange site is strategic for the two managers. “I appreciate the strategic importance of this innovation site in Caen,” adds Bruno Zerbib, who joined the group four months ago. “There are a lot of disruptive innovation topics in which Caen has been at the forefront.”

Working on electronic messaging and cryptography in its early days, four decades ago, Orange has also been a pioneer over the last 15 years in the mobile payment service and in NFC technology (phone interaction and credit card reader). . “Do we still have this DNA of innovation? », questions Bruno Zerbib. “Of course, even if now we are also in open innovation, that means co-construction, in collaboration outside of Orange”, as with the companies Bodycap, YouSign or Conscience Robotics.

Payment with a phone, cybersecurity…

What are the latest innovations coming out of the Caen laboratories?

The first concerns SIM card security and cybersecurity. “This is a major activity for us,” explains Alexandre Nolle, innovation director of the Caen site. “We have an application that analyzes data to identify and alert risks of fraud and cyber threats.” The second innovation concerns the deployment of mobile payment in 14 countries in Africa (Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Cameroon, Madagascar, etc.). “It’s an electronic wallet on their phone, which makes them secure on a daily basis when paying and managing their money. We have an open platform where we co-build with them,” adds Pascal Lesieur, also from the Caen site. The third is at the service of businesses, regarding the digitalization of offers with Orange Business. “Before it took days or weeks with the call number, now it’s just one click.”

“The digital revolution, an extraordinary opportunity”

Investing nearly a billion euros in innovation across the group, Orange wants to continue its development.

We are experiencing a digital revolution as there was the industrial revolution and the agricultural revolution, it is an extraordinary opportunity. Uses continue to explode and I don’t see this stopping in the future.

“Some new technologies seem useless or excessive when they are created, but we cannot do without them afterwards,” adds Bruno Zerbib. Orange is therefore continuing its development in 5G and will launch a satellite offer in mid-November in France, without forgetting an appetite for cybersecurity and dematerialization, while preserving the environment.

Caen researchers are continuing their work on blockchain (secure information sharing solution) or offices of the future, such as the automatic classification of emails, thanks to targeted help from artificial intelligence. Innovations that will be our daily lives in a few years.
