Orange juice is one of the most popular fruit juices among Austrians. A new plant disease, hurricanes and empty warehouses are causing the price of orange juice to skyrocket. The price of (frozen, concentrated) orange juice on the US commodity exchange has almost doubled in the past twelve months. While the pound cost 1.79 US dollars (1.67 euros) in September 2022, the 52-week high is now 3.51 US dollars.
Representative from Austria: “Prices are higher than ever”
“World market prices for orange juice are higher than ever before,” said Florian Berger, managing director of the Austrian Fruit Juice Industry Association in the Food Industry Association, on Wednesday, according to a press release. The price of orange juice has tripled in three years.
The US Department of Agriculture estimated global orange production for the 2022/23 marketing year to be 5 percent below the previous year’s level. Experts predicted that the slump would be particularly severe in the USA, where production is likely to fall to its lowest level in more than 56 years. The main reasons for this are the spread of a plant disease – the so-called citrus greening – and the effects of hurricanes on crop quantities in Florida. But bad weather also had a negative impact on harvest volumes in Brazil, the largest orange producing country, and in Europe.
