Organic Vegetable Project in Zealand: A Sustainable Future for Swiss Agriculture

Zealand is well known for its vegetables and is even nicknamed the “vegetable garden of Switzerland”. In recent years, organic vegetables have been in the spotlight. This is partly thanks to the regional development project (PDR) organic vegetables in Zealand, the cost of which, estimated at 79 million francs, is partly financed by the canton of Friborg and the Confederation. It notably includes the construction of buildings, marketing and innovation platforms and agrotourism offers.

Launched in 2021, the project is expected to be implemented over a period of six years. “A third of what was planned has been achieved. We are on the right track,” says Janine Rüst, director of the Zealand organic vegetable PDR association. With more than thirty members, including a majority of producers, Bio Fribourg, Morat Tourisme or, more recently, the Interprofessional Association of Vully Wines, the association now presents itself under the brand Passion Seeland Bi
