Orlando Ranked Among Worst Cities for Allergies in New Study | HouseFresh Report

Orlando, Florida, is facing a significant allergy season, ranking as the fifth-worst city in the nation for outdoor allergies, according to a recent study. The analysis, conducted by HouseFresh, examined allergen data and local environmental conditions to determine which cities are experiencing the most severe allergy symptoms. This comes as southern states, including Florida, are seeing particularly high concentrations of pollen from grass, trees, and ragweed.

Seasonal allergies impact a substantial portion of the population – affecting roughly five times more people than food allergies – yet can be more challenging to avoid. Symptoms range from mild discomfort like itchiness and sneezing to more serious reactions, including asthma attacks. The increasing severity of allergy seasons is linked to broader environmental changes, particularly rising carbon dioxide levels and a warming climate.

The HouseFresh study highlights a concerning trend: the lengthening of pollen seasons. “Why the South?” the report states, “Rising levels of carbon dioxide lead plants to produce pollen while warming the climate. A warming climate leads to earlier, longer and more intense pollen seasons. So-called ‘seasonal’ allergies now stretch to fill the whole calendar year in some locations — particularly in the Southern ‘pollen belt,’ where it was warmer to start with and where strong winds circulate more pollen in the air and for longer.”

Laredo, Texas, topped the list as the city with the worst outdoor allergies nationwide, primarily due to high levels of tree pollen. Yet, Orlando’s high levels of grass pollen secured its place among the most challenging cities for allergy sufferers. In contrast, Miami fared better, with an average “Allergy Score” of just under 4, indicating relatively lower allergy levels compared to other Florida cities.

The Impact of Climate Change on Allergy Seasons

The study underscores the connection between climate change and the increasing prevalence and intensity of allergies. Rising temperatures and increased carbon dioxide levels contribute to greater pollen production and longer pollen seasons. This means individuals sensitive to allergens may experience symptoms for a more extended period each year. The “pollen belt” in the Southern United States is particularly affected, experiencing warmer temperatures and strong winds that facilitate the spread of pollen.

Florida Cities and Allergy Scores

While Orlando is struggling with high grass pollen counts, other Florida cities present varying levels of allergy severity. Miami, as noted, has a comparatively lower “Allergy Score,” suggesting a more manageable allergy season. The study did not provide detailed rankings for other Florida cities beyond Orlando and Miami.

What Can Allergy Sufferers Do?

While the study doesn’t offer specific medical advice, understanding the factors contributing to increased allergy levels can help individuals take proactive steps. Staying informed about local pollen counts, limiting outdoor exposure during peak pollen times, and keeping windows closed are common recommendations. Individuals experiencing severe allergy symptoms should consult with a healthcare professional for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Looking ahead, continued monitoring of pollen levels and further research into the effects of climate change on allergy seasons will be crucial. Understanding these trends will allow public health officials and individuals to better prepare for and mitigate the impact of allergies in the years to reach.
