Óscar del Solar’s Experience and Challenges at Deportes Concepción: A Coach’s Perspective

Óscar del Solar, an experienced 65-year-old coach, gave an interview to AS and He recalled his last step at Deportes Concepción. One that ended in September 2022, after reaping a 42% yield, and which also had several disagreements between DT and the leadership.

“It’s the first time I’ve talked about Deportes Concepción since I left,” says the coach, who has no problem giving details of everything he experienced at the club.

– What would you say about your last stint at Deportes Concepción?

– I think it was the way the club was. They played very well in 2021 and in 2022 a team was made with a very low budget. We got to within two points of the leader and, for me, we were the best playing team in the division. Now, the second semester was difficult. There were many difficulties in the technical and management team.

– Esteban González had to leave…

– Yes, due to lack of payments. We also suffered the loss of six starting players due to injuries… The management of the support areas was at a very low level and it showed. The starters had a level, but we couldn’t sign more players of the same level, due to budgets. In the second semester, the team played very well again, but had many finishing problems. There was also a very big wear and tear in the relationship with the management of the club…

– What do you mean?

– We disagreed on many situations and there were some indiscipline issues (by some players). I understood that decisions had to be made and the club preferred to look to the side to avoid problems.

– What types of discipline?

– Departures… They recorded themselves doing certain things and uploaded it to the networks. The footballer has the possibility of doing whatever he wants in his private life, but recording himself and uploading it to the networks was like a challenge for the club. It’s like saying ‘I don’t care what they’re doing, I make my life’. So, I found that difficult and it generated internal problems for me. There was no solution, but I was very calm with all the effort we made and the way we played when we had a full team. While I was there, the club always fought with the most important teams and was never in the relegation zone. For me it was a new experience.

– In that way?

– I have many years in the club. I was champion of Primera B in 1994, I was in the Copa Libertadores league in 1998 and in 1999 we were semifinalists in the Copa Conmebol. I also rose with the club as a coach and as a physical trainer, and I went to a Copa Chile final as a coach. So, he had always been linked to positive things with the club. Now, things end like this when the clubs go wrong. There is a pervasive effect of negative things.

– Now, then, hope that the panorama will change for the future…

– Hopefully at some point the club can change its form and its professionalism in all areas, because that ends up affecting the final product, which is the staging on match day. I studied Sports Management and I feel that there is a lot to contribute in each area of a club. I had an idea in Deportes Concepción…

– Which?

– I wanted to have started as a coach and then become the sports director of the club, looking for areas of development in youth, children’s, women’s and professional football, with areas of analysis, scouting, training control… But hey , none of that could be done. My title thesis was a program of 400 pages and it was highly recognized in the evaluation of the Spanish Football Federation, but I was only able to apply one page… In any case, my time at Deportes Concepción was positive. At times, the team played very well and that made me happy. There were a lot of young coaches who came and asked me to watch the training sessions, because they really liked how we played.

– I noticed him a little annoyed and disappointed when he spoke about the board of Deportes Concepción…

– I’m not upset, because that is already part of the past. And perhaps disappointed is not the word either, because to be disappointed in something you have to wait a long time.

– In other words, I didn’t expect anything from the leaders…

– Actually it was a period of observation of a division in which I had never directed and which is closer to amateur football than professionalism.

– Did you experience any other uncomfortable situation at the club?

– There were many things that were not logical and that I had not experienced in professional football, such as the fact that the team did not have dressing rooms to get dressed and shower. Or that I didn’t have a place to talk or that we could only use the training ground in June. The other thing was that when we arrived, in 2021, there were seven or eight players who wanted to retire, because they were disenchanted. So, that’s weird. Like the aura that was there was not adequate. Not everyone manages to realize what an athlete really needs to perform and be able to demand from him.
