The Ottawa Senators will have to give up a 1st round pick for their role in the trade of Evgenii Dadonov to the Vegas Golden Knights in July 2021 and the possibly aborted trade between the Golden Knights and the Anaheim Ducks in March 2022, the National Hockey League announced Wednesday.

The Senators will lose their 1st round pick in 2024, 2025 or 2026 and will have to announce their decision 24 hours after the conclusion of the lottery for the next draft.

The Senators traded Dadonov to the Golden Knights for Nick Holden and a 3rd round pick in July 2021, but failed to tell the Golden Knights that the Russian had a 10-team no-trade clause, which caused problems at the 2022 trade deadline.

The Golden Knights had in fact traded Dadonov and a 2nd round pick to the Ducks in return for John Moore and Ryan Kesler’s contract. The trade was canceled two days later by the NHL, however, as the Ducks were one of ten clubs on Dadonov’s list.

At the time, the Ducks and Golden Knights did not know that Dadonov did not want to be traded to the Anaheim team. He was finally sold to the Montreal Canadiens that year.
