People affected by this virus, carried mainly by common mosquitoes (which become contaminated exclusively through contact with infected birds), developed symptoms between mid-July and the end of September. Hospitalizations were necessary, but no deaths were reported. In detail, 24 infections were recorded in Gironde, five in Charente-Maritime and two in Charente.
This increase in cases testifies to a breakthrough in the territory of the virus which, until this summer, was only observed in the South-East of the country. The Regional Health Agency (ARS) received on July 27 the report of a first human case in New Aquitaine – in Bordeaux precisely.
Horses, flamingos, etc.
Illustration of this viral circulation in the region, 16 equine cases have been reported (12 in Gironde, 4 in Charente-Maritime) and 6 avian cases (in Charente-Maritime).
According to “The New Republic”, three horses positive for the virus died in September in Charente-Maritime, in Saint-Hippolyte, Mortagne-sur-Gironde and Aigrefeuille-d’Aunis. The disease has not spared the Palmyre Zoo, in Pays Royannais: still according to the newspaper which cites the park’s veterinarian, 12 pink flamingos died at the beginning of the summer, including five confirmed cases. Investigations are being carried out following other suspicious deaths. In Saint-Jean-d’Angély, a bird of prey died at the end of August.
