Özil will play for Basaksehir in the future

The German Mesut Özil will play for the Turkish first division club Basaksehir in the future. The ex-world champion signed a one-year contract on Thursday at his own request, as announced by the club, which is close to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. There is an option for another season. Only the day before, Fenerbahce Istanbul had announced the termination of the contract with the 33-year-old.

Özil, who joined Fenerbahce from Arsenal in the Premier League last year, had been excluded from the big club’s squad since March. The reason for the suspension was not made public. In November, club president Ali Koc complained that the 92-times German national player finally had to concentrate on his work.
