Khandeel’s assassination was recently discussed in Pakistan and internationally. Following the controversy surrounding Khandeel’s murder, Pakistan’s parliament passed a law declaring life imprisonment for manslaughter.
Under the new law, even if the parents pardon the offenders, the life sentence cannot be commuted. But the judge has the discretion in this. Wasim’s parents initially refused to apologize for Khandil’s murder, but later apologized.
Wasim killed Khandeel Baloch alias Fouzia Azeem in January 2016. He was strangled to death after being given sleeping pills at his home in Multan. Wasim said Baloch’s controversial social media posts and statements had tarnished the family’s image.
Khandil had sent a letter to Pakistan’s Interior Minister saying that he was facing threats from his brother and needed security.
