New deadly stage in the rise of tensions between the two countries. Pakistani army killed 47 in bombing raids on Saturday April 16 in eastern Afghanistan, official says Taliban Afghans on Sunday April 17.

Forty-one people died in the Khost area, all civilians, “mainly women and children”, according to director of information and culture in Khost. Another Afghan official reported six deaths in Kunar province on Saturday. “We are implementing all measures to prevent the repetition [de telles attaques] and ask that our sovereignty be respected”warned the government spokesman after the strikes on Saturday. “If a war breaks out, it will not be in the interests of either party”he added.

These attacks appear to be reprisals: seven Pakistani soldiers were killed on April 14 near the border, by “terrorists operating from Afghanistan”according to the Pakistani Foreign Ministry. Islamabad accuses Kabul of harboring Pakistani militants who carry out terrorist attacks against their country from Afghan territory. The Taliban deny these accusations and accuse Pakistan of building a fence along their common border, while thousands of people cross it every day, for example to seek treatment in Pakistan.
