“I think we can do more than what people expect from us,” said Dutch star Baz de Leede ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023 match against Pakistan at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad on Thursday. The lead was taken by runs and it even looked like victory was on the cards, but the experience of the Pakistani bowlers stopped the Netherlands’ surge and they defeated the Netherlands by 81 runs to get their first win.
It has to be said that it was the inexperience of the Dutch bowlers in the international arena that took Pakistan to 286 from 38 for three at one stage. Although the Netherlands got off to a decent start with the bat, the batsmen failed to put together consistent partnerships. On the other hand, there was no strong performance from Pakistan. It is a relief for Pakistan that all the bowlers took wickets.
Vikramjit Malik, an Indian of the Dutch team, came out as the opener and scored 52 runs off 67 balls. But the superstar of the Dutch line was the lead. Batting at 51/2, D’s lead took some time to establish. But after finding the rhythm, Pakistan’s world-class bowling line-up was ineffective and progressed.
In the 17th over, D-Lead chipped Mohammad Nawaz to long-on for the best shot of the match. The lead and Vikramjit held till 24 overs. With the return of Vikramjit, the Dutch midfield began to collapse. It was here that Pakistan managed to win the match. Later, they took wickets at regular intervals and managed to restrict the Netherlands to 205.
Batting first, Pakistan were bowled out for 286 in 49 overs. Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel were the top scorers with 68 runs each. Mohammad Nawaz scored 39 runs and Shadab Khan scored 32 runs. Skipper Babar Azam was dismissed for five runs. Bass de Lead, who took four wickets for 62 runs, shone in the bowling.
