TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian teenager Monday in a raid in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Health Ministry said, amid a wave of violence that has ravaged the region for the past year. .
The Israeli army did not immediately comment. The armed forces raid towns in the West Bank almost every night in what they describe as an attempt to crack down on armed militancy. Dozens of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire so far this year and 19 people have been killed in Palestinian attacks on Israelis in that period.
The Palestinian Health Ministry identified the teenager as 17-year-old Jibril al-Laada. Three other people were seriously injured in clashes in the Aqabar Jabr refugee camp, near the West Bank city of Jericho. The camp has been a frequent target of Israeli raids.
Israel began its raids after a series of Palestinian attacks last spring. That sparked one of the most violent times between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank in years, and while Israel says the raids are intended to thwart future attacks, the violence against Israelis does not appear to have abated.
Israeli forces killed nearly 150 Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem last year, making 2022 the deadliest year in those areas since 2004, according to the prominent Israeli rights group B’Tselem. Casualties have increased this year, with 98 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire, just under half associated with armed groups, according to a tally by The Associated Press.
Israel says most of the dead were armed fighters, but young people protesting against the incursions have also been killed, as well as people not taking part in the clashes.
Palestinians see the raids as a tightening of the 56-year Israeli occupation, with no end in sight. The Palestinians claim the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem to form an independent state. Israel captured this territory in the 1967 Six Day War.
