Launched on October 2, the vaccination campaign against papillomavirus, aimed at 5th grade students, continues in the 87 middle schools of Limousin.
Tuesday, November 14, around ten students were vaccinated at Jean-Rebier college, in Isle, in the presence of health stakeholders and local elected officials from the City and the Department, mobilized in the vaccination campaign carried out in New Aquitaine.
Access to vaccination for all students
“The earlier we vaccinate, the more effectiveness we obtain. Between 90 and 100% protection when vaccination is done before first sexual intercourse,” recalls Sophie Girard, director of the Regional Health Agency in Haute-Vienne.
The objective is to vaccinate, in middle schools, the greatest number of students in 5th grade (90%) with a first dose until December.
In Haute-Vienne, the delegation of the ARS, the Primary Health Insurance Fund and the teams from the vaccination centers of the City of Limoges and the University Hospital are participating in the system.
“This campaign should make it possible to give everyone access to the vaccine and to fight against social and territorial inequalities. We remind you that the vaccine is fully covered for families, and that it is safe and effective.”

Stacy, 12 years old, does not regret having endured the little injection. “I know that this vaccine is important for my health, for my future. So I’m doing it,” she confided Tuesday morning. As with every student, the young girl was vaccinated quietly, in a room at the school dedicated to vaccination. She was able to be reassured by two health professionals, before receiving the injection, provided by a doctor.
Only 13% of boys vaccinated
Vaccination coverage remains insufficient in France. In Haute-Vienne, 53% of girls received two doses of vaccine (46% in Nouvelle-Aquitaine), only 13% for boys (9% in Nouvelle-Aquitaine).
As a reminder, the papillomavirus (HPV) causes 6,300 cancers each year in France, and 80% of women and men are exposed to the virus during their lives.
Faced with the public health issue, the vaccination campaign aims to convince parents to have their child vaccinated. A first assessment will soon be carried out to understand the obstacles facing certain families.
“There may have been blockages in the face of vaccines and false information that circulated in the pandemic context that we experienced, underlines Matthieu Parneix, responsible for health policy at the City of Limoges. This is why we must continue to “inform families about this real public health issue.”
1,789 vaccination authorizations were recorded during September in colleges in the three departments of Limousin. 808 in Haute-Vienne (out of 3,648 students), 723 in Corrèze, 258 in Creuse.
The second dose of vaccination is planned between April and June 2024.
