The Rapid Support Force, a paramilitary force, had been fighting the army for seven weeks to capture the national museum. They entered the museum last day. On April 15, following clashes broke out, museum staff were denied entry. Employees do not know what the current situation is. The museum is housed in a large building on the banks of the Nile in central Khartoum. This is the area where the most intense conflict is taking place near the central bank.

Former director Hatim Alnoor said the museum also has artifacts, statues, pottery and ancient murals from the Stone Age to the Christian and Islamic periods.
