Southern Rail Service Derails Outside Lewes
A passenger train derailed in southern England on Thursday, seriously injuring two people and leaving nine others with minor injuries after three carriages overturned, according to the British Transport Police.
The Southern Rail service, traveling from Victoria station in London to Eastbourne with approximately 150 people on board, left the tracks outside the tourist town of Lewes. The incident unfolded on Britain’s hottest day of the year so far, as temperatures in London climbed as high as 38 degrees Celsius (100 Fahrenheit). Social media imagery depicted emergency personnel and bystanders standing atop the toppled train cars in the aftermath.
Passengers Describe Violent Motion and Sudden Impact
Passenger Rob Bradley recounted that the train began rocking aggressively as it accelerated. The carriage he shared with his 6-year-old daughter suddenly jerked upward before the emergency brakes engaged.
“Everything got thrown forward. My laptop, my AirPods, our bags,” Bradley told the BBC. “The train kind of skidded for quite a while before it stopped and only then when we turned around did we see that the whole back of the train — literally where we were sat — was open and there was smoke and dust pouring into the carriage.”
Bradley observed that the car immediately behind them had flipped onto its side and slid down an embankment into a lower field. While he and his daughter escaped uninjured, he noted seeing other passengers from the overturned cars with blood on their heads and clothing. Another traveler told him they sustained cuts when a shattered window broke.
Three-Hour Evacuation Operation in Southern England
Aerial footage broadcast from the scene displayed firefighters and paramedics treating passengers in an adjacent field, supported by multiple ambulances and three helicopters.
Assistant Chief Constable Ian Drummond-Smith of the British Transport Police stated Thursday evening that a significant emergency service response remained active at the site, though all passengers had been safely evacuated. The evacuation process took about three hours to complete, according to transport police.
The South East Coast Ambulance Service reported that patients were assessed and treated on-site, with some transferred to local hospitals for further medical attention. Other passengers were directed to a local community center to receive support from partner agencies.
Rail Network Faces Major Disruptions
Southern Rail issued warnings of major disruptions continuing until further notice, advising the public not to travel as extensive infrastructure inspections and recovery operations are required before services resume.
Investigators Deploy to Determine Derailment Cause
The exact cause of the derailment remains under investigation. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch announced via an X post that inspectors had deployed to the site to begin gathering evidence.
The incident marks the second major rail accident in the country within weeks, following a collision north of London in June that resulted in one fatality.
Eastbourne MP Josh Babarinde addressed the situation on social media, writing that once the immediate emergency concludes, critical questions must be addressed regarding how the event occurred, what preventative measures will be implemented, and how affected passengers will be compensated.
