What happened in Ecuador
Ecuador is under a strong national crisis because the president Daniel Noboa was forced to dictate the State of Exception after the escape of two dangerous drug traffickers from prisons in Guayaquil and the subsequent escalation of violence in the streets.
It all started on Sunday, January 7, when one of the main leaders of the criminal group known as Los Choneros, nicknamed Fito managed to escape from the Guayaquil penitentiary center where he was held. It is important to note that this escape occurred just three days after the arrest of Fabricio Colón Pico, leader of Los Lobos, another cartel in the country. However, Pico also managed to escape from prison this Tuesdayaccording to authorities.
As a consequence of these events, the National Police of Ecuador reported that riots in several prisons in the countrywhere the inmates took control of the prisons, holding the officers and other personnel who were working in said facilities hostage.
Drug violence in Ecuador: the president declared the country in a state of “internal armed conflict”
In the midst of this fierce crisis, President Noboa declared a State of Exception, which implies a suspension of the rights to freedom of association, the inviolability of the home, the inviolability of correspondence in prisons and freedom of movement, between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., for 60 days.
