Apple provides some important details to know about downloading and updating applications obtained on iPhone via alternative platforms to the App Store. What actually happens to the DMA if you temporarily leave the European Union?

Let’s go ! The iPhone in Europe is experiencing a lot of upheaval under the Digital Markets Act. The famous DMA is in fact taking action today to force Apple and other tech giants to put an end to practices deemed anti-competitive. On Apple smartphones, the important iOS 17.4 update is being deployed.
One of the major consequences of this change is that the App Store will no longer be the only application store authorized on iOS. Indeed, third-party developers will be able to offer their alternative stores. We should therefore see several flourish, even if Apple has still put in place a system discouraging developers from leaving the App Store.
For example, the Epic Games Store will return to the iPhone to offer Fortnite.
What rules for a European iPhone abroad?
However, these major changes are only obligatory on the Old Continent. In the rest of the world, Apple will keep its own rules without taking the DMA into account. A question may therefore arise for iPhone users in Europe who temporarily have to travel far away, for vacation for example. Do App Store rules remain within the DMA or not?

If you leave the European Union for a short trip, you will still have access to other app sales platforms during a grace period. If you are gone for too long, you will lose access to certain features, including the installation of new and other app sales platforms. Apps you installed from other app marketplaces will continue to work, but they won’t be able to be updated by the platform you downloaded them from.
In other words, everything will depend on the duration of your stay outside the EU. On the other hand, it is a shame that Apple does not provide more information on the exact temporality of this “Grace period“. Is it a few weeks? Several months? We will still have to wait a little before knowing exactly.
